Pin up girl tattoos - Appletree Days 1940s frippery and

Lets talk tattoos..

Somehow I have always inherently known that pin up girl tattoos were associated with 2 things Naval personnel, and the 1940s. Im sure this is probably the case for a lot of people. My brother in law Tim had one on his forearm which was hugely fascinating to me as I was growing up, and an even bigger source of amusement and ridicule for him as he did! And yes, he was Royal Navy.

So I wondered if I could just dig a little bit and find out a tiny bit more. Ive watched LAInk enough to know that Kat Von D specialises in portraits of which the Gil Elvgren style is one she is adept at. I love those tattoos. Kat is particularly creative and talented and you can certainly identify a better quality tattoo.

However, what makes me happy is finding out that these tattoos are ever more popular, and requested by not just men, but the likes of us #vintageglamour women a kind of tongue in cheek response to the 1940s/50s domestic goddess social stigma. As a woman, if youve got one of these youre probably being slightly ironic, as well as loving the art.

Pin-up Girl Tattoos pretty girls and tattoos never go out of style. A pinup girl is a woman whose physical attractiveness would entice one to place a picture of her on a wall. The term was first attested to in English in 1941; however the practice is documented back at least to the 1890s. The pin up images could be cut out of magazines or newspapers, or be from postcard or chromo-lithographs, and so on. Such photos often appear on calendars, which are meant to be pinned up anyway. Later, posters of pin-up girls were mass produced.

Many pin ups were photographs of celebrities who were considered sex symbols.
One of the most popular early pin-up girls was Betty Grable. Her poster was
ubiquitous in the lockers of G.I.s during World War II. Other pin-ups were
artwork, often depicting idealized versions of what some thought a particularly
beautiful or attractive woman should look like.

But do not think the era of pin up girls has long since gone. The Modern pin up girl is just as popular and in demand as it was back in the 40s & 50s. Models such
as Dita Von Teese who many have claimed to be the new Queen of the modern pin
up models. Sabina Kelly a former Vegas show girl whos body is covered in
tattoos, owns her own tattoo parlor and dances burlesque at gigs across the
continental USA. Bernie Dexter, the rockabilly girl. The list goes on.

The stipulation criteria for the Royal Armed forces now is this that pin up girl tattoos are allowed but.

Tattoos that are offensive, obscene or excessive in size or number will be a bar to entry or re-entry. Tattoos should not be visible on the head and neck and may be a bar to entry when on the hand. If you have any you may be asked to complete a form describing your tattoos. They will be seen during your medical examination.

Pin up girls have appeared on many posters used for propaganda, and to sell products, but more recently, women are commissioning starlet images of themselves to reveal their #vintageglamour side and to have as a personal portfolio.

These starlet images would be a perfect substitute for any Calendar Girls style calendar..
