The MS refers to the Mara Salvatrucha, which is one of the large gangs that are found in Central America and the United States as a whole. The gang is made up of Salvadorans, Hondurans Guatemalans and other Central Americans. There are several factions of the group that are found in the USA and even Latin America. The gang can also be found in other countries outside America like Canada, Guatemala, Colombia, Great Britain, Mexico and Germany.

To distinguish the members they have tattoos on their bodies and faces. The marks that are used usually have the initials MS, the number 13 or 18. There are also other symbols that are used to show the area where the gang member specializes in. Some of the symbols that are used include crossbones, dice, grenades and daggers. The tattoos on a gang member can be large enough to cover the whole back or very tiny such that it can fit on the hand. The size of the symbol used may be used to indicate how involved the person is in the gang. If you have been in the gang for a long period of time, you will have larger tattoos compared to the younger members. Depending on which set you belong to the tattoo will have initials of the area that you come from.
