Tattoos are permanent, which is why it is so important to make the right decision when choosing one. It is important to consider not only how meaningful it is to you, but how others are going to perceive it. Choosing something that complements your personality or style is likely to get you more attention than whatever the trendy new tattoos are.
Classics
Choosing a classic design for a tattoo is a good idea if you're going for a timeless piece of art that likely won't go out of style. Old-school classics include anchors, pinup girls, hearts or most anything that you'd see on a 1960s-era biker or a WWII veteran. For a sentimental classic, the "Mom" heart on one a shoulder or biceps is a lovely gesture that the ladies are sure to love. Choosing a classic says that you don't buy in to trends and you're willing to display your classic anti-cool on your sleeve, or anywhere else for that matter.
Personal
Sometimes the best statements are the ones you come up with yourself, whether it's from a homemade design or a picture you found interesting. Rather than wrapping your upper arm with a barbed wire ink job that you'll likely regret later, do something meaningful to you. This can make a good ice breaker. Many artists are capable of inking a picture from a photograph, opening up even more possibilities for personal expression, though a this needs an extra-hard think about whether it's the right decision.
Tribal
Tattoos have been around for thousands of years. Tattoos once symbolized one's tribe or seniority. Tribal tattoos are now mostly aesthetic, though there has been a trend to revert away from this. Rather than thick meaningless lines, people have chosen to get classic Hawaiian, Polynesian, Japanese, Haitian, Celtic, or other cultures' tattoos with meaning tied into their culture. Do your research you might appear deep, even if you aren't. This is also a good way to appear worldly to interested parties. (Bonus points if you can know the country's top three exports.)
