As a child, I lived in a wonder world of fairies, witches, science fiction and botany, says Instagrammer Katie McCann (@beetleblossom), an artist based in Berkeley, California. Not much has changedthe only difference being that I record all of my thoughts and stories in the form of collages. She describes the figures she creates as hybrids made up of insects, birds, shells, bones, plants and machinery. Seeking out images from antique books, Katie intricately cuts and assembles pieces like a jigsaw puzzle. I might replace hands with claws or put a shell on a head, she says. I see such beauty in anatomical drawings. I love to cut them up and rearrange them, turning them into otherworldly creatures.
One of Katies favorite collages is Edwina Scissorhands, inspired by the movie Edward Scissorhands. I always have a pair of scissors in my hand, so it seemed appropriate for me to create a female version of this character, says Katie. Actually, I am totally obsessed with scissors; I buy them everywhere I go, kind of like a souvenir. I have drawers full of them and I am always looking for the ultimate pair!
