With a rich and varied history full of myth and legend, its no wonder that symbols and imagery from Ancient Egypt are a popular choice for tattoo designs. As well as making excellent tattoos nowadays, the history of tattooing actually goes back to the Ancient Egyptians. From people depicted with tattoos in ancient tomb carvings, to the tattooed mummified remains of Egyptians from around 2000 B.C, its clear that even back then tattoos were popular!
Ankh Tattoo Designs
One of the most recognizable Egyptian symbols is the ankh, Ancient Egypts symbol for everlasting life. It looks like a cross with a loop at the top, or the letter T with a teardrop shape sitting on top. An ankh tattoo is perfect on its own and can be made as small and simple or as large and detailed as you like. A small ankh tattoo design would look great on the foot or the wrist, but you could also go for a huge and intricate ankh as a large back tattoo design.
Anubis Tattoo Designs
Out of the many different gods from Ancient Egyptian legend, Anubis is probably the most familiar throughout the world. Shown with the body of a man and the head of a jackal, a tattoo of Anubis makes a very striking design. An Anubis tattoo design can show him in a standing position, seated on a throne or even crouched down like a jackal.
Horus Tattoo Designs
Another Ancient Egyptian god who makes a great tattoo design is Horus, with the body of a man and the head of a falcon and, like Anubis, Horus makes a fantastic and detailed Egyptian tattoo design. A Horus design would look great as a large tattoo, for example a half-sleeve or a large back piece, and is effective in either black and gray or glorious color.
Eye of Horus Tattoo Designs
The symbol known as the Eye of Horus is another identifiable design that would look great as a tattoo. The eye represents protection against evil, so as well as looking wonderful it will also be a brilliant way to inject meaning into your Egyptian tattoo design. You could go for a simple black design which would fit just about anywhere on the body, or you might decide to go for more color and detail. You could even have the eye part of the symbol shown as a realistic and detailed human eye.
Hieroglyph Tattoo Designs
Hieroglyphs are images that were used as a writing system in Ancient Egypt. If you do your research thoroughly you will be able to come up with a design that not only looks cool, but also has some special meaning to it. Common hieroglyphs include images of the sun, birds, men, waves and more, and the hieroglyphs many mean one thing when shown singly, but something completely different when put together with other hieroglyphs.
Cartouche Tattoo Designs
A great way of making your hieroglyph tattoo design stand out and look authentic is to incorporate hieroglyphs within a cartouche. A cartouche is a tall oval shape which contains hieroglyphs and was used in Ancient Egypt to denote royalty and status. The upright cartouche makes a great design for arms and legs, but would fit in most places on the body. Why not try having one on the back of your neck going down onto your back?
Egyptian Cat Tattoo Designs
Cats in Ancient Egypt, known as mau were highly regarded, and worshipped as deities. An Egyptian cat tattoo design is therefore the perfect choice, especially if youre a cat lover! The Egyptian cat should be portrayed as slender and regal, with and angled face and long, slim tail. Typical Egyptian cat tattoos show black cats, but you can opt for any time of coloring and markings for your cat. An interesting way to combine an Egyptian cat with the symbol of the Eye of Horus would be to show a cats face with the Eye of Horus for the cats eyes.
