There is something about the sight of a wolf tattoo design; of its thick fur and intelligent gaze; of its loyalty and independence that stirs up the same feelings deep in the human heart.
Indeed, throughout history wolf body art has been considered a powerful symbol of strength, courage, loyalty and independence. The sheer physical beauty of the wolf tattoo has made it an icon of individuality and natural power that speaks to the lover of freedom in each of us.
I have been known on occasion to howl at the moon.
While society today views the wolf as strong, independent and of fierce courage, throughout history different cultures have seen the wolf from different perspectives.
To the Celts, the wolf tattoo design represented not only loyalty, but intuition, learning and the shadow that lies within each of us. In their eyes the wolf was a source of wisdom and could guide ones dreams, assist in magic, inspire creativity and assist in the transition from life to death and rebirth.
Native American traditions also saw the wolf as a teacher, but also as a guide along new paths, a force that would inspire one with new ideas and a powerful subconscious symbol of the secret knowledge and wisdom that each of us holds deep inside of ourselves. Indeed, the wolf design was seen by the Native Americans as a guide to that inner wisdom, and seeing a wolf or a wolf symbol was indicative of one being on the right path.
All throughout history, particularly European history, the wolf tattoo has been considered an evil creature, its fierce independence and refusal to be domesticated or to simply give way to encroaching civilization has been seen as an affront against human growth and expansion. To this end the wolf was hunted nearly to extinction both in Great Britain and Europe.
