Imagine this : perhaps the most important street photographer of the twentieth century was a nanny who kept everything to herself. Nobody had ever seen her work and she was a complete unknown until the time of her death. For decades Vivians work hid in the shadows until decades later (in 2007), historical hobbyist John Maloof bought a box full of never developed negatives at a local auction for $380.
John began to develop the negatives and it didnt take long before he realised that these were no ordinary street snapshots from the 50s and 60s these pictures were a lot more then that. Maiers work is particularly evocative for those who grew up in the 50s and 60s because she seemed to stare deep into the soul of the time and preserve the everyday experience of the people. She ventured outside the comfortable homes and picturesque residential neighborhoods of her employers to document all segments of life in and around the big city. Below weve rounded up some of our favorites.
Vivian Maier Street Photography
He embarked on a journey to find the legend who took these beautiful pictures and he quickly discovered her name: Vivian Maier.
Before he could find her, John discovered her obituary in the newspaper of 2009 . She slipped on ice, suffered a head injury and never fully recovered. She was 83 years old when she passed away.
Since then, the work of this mysterious and incredibly talented woman has turned the art world upside down. The pictures gained international media attention with exhibitions in London, New York , Los Angeles , Oslo and Hamburg.
John has also made a documentary about Vivian and her work you can check out the trailer below.
WOW, what an incredible story and what an inspiration!
If youd like to see even more of this amazing photographer then be sure to check out her official site, where you can also found some of her color work.

You know Mario. Everyone knows Mario, but did you also know that the iconic Nintendo Mascot was once known by another name?
Ossan was the original name of Nintendos famous mascot during the early days of the Famicom, the Japanese equivalent to the Nintendo Entertainment System. The nickname Ossan means middle-aged guy, the internal name of Mario before he was known as Mr Video. Shigeru Miyamoto, originally designed Mario while developing Donkey Kong and named him Mr. video.
The story goes that during localisation of Donkey Kong for North America, Nintendo of Americas warehouse landlord Mario Segale confronted the then-president of Nintendo America, Minoru Arakawa, demanding back rent. Following a heated argument, the Nintendo employees eventually convinced Segale he would be paid, and opted to name the character in the game Mario after him.

The American Scott Summit has twenty years of experience as an industrial designer. He now uses this experience to make prosthetics a lot more pleasing on the eye and personal. As he says himself: Prosthetics can not replicate the look and feel of lost limbs but they can carry a lot of personality. Its quite touching to see how one can use his professional skills to help others cope with their loss. At the bottom you can also see his inspiring speech at TEDx.

Thank God for graffiti! I mean what is more depressing than a grey, drab, boring looking sidewalk or concrete wall right? Graffiti itself has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. And before you go assuming that the ancient Romans only vandalized with the most brilliant bons mots, think again. Those Romans fellows, it seems, were foul-mouthed, hyper-sexual, and frequently prone to ridiculously immature humor. If youre up for a laugh then I suggest you read some of the translations that were dug up by the excavators.
Nowadays, however, graffiti is considered a crime in most countries. Fortunately, there are plenty of bold artists out there who consider the world to be their canvas and still use this art-form to express themselves, usually with a underlying social or political message. More often then not in just simple written words, but in some cases; with elaborate wall paintings that can leave you in awe. Below you will find 40 graffiti examples where this urban art-form is taken to a whole new level. They manage to turn the concrete jungle into a place of magic and wonders. I hope you enjoy them and remember that you can also add your own pictures to the list. Doing so is as easy as herding chickens. Just click the submit button on top of this site. Ok, lets not drag this out any longer, shall we? Enjoy this collection of some of the finest graffiti art gathered from around the world!

Obviously, this list would not be complete without Bansky, no doubt the worlds most famous graffiti artist, whose true identity still remains a mystery. His artistic works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world. His art is worth a lot of money but Banksy doesnt sell his street graffiti directly himself; however, art auctioneers have been known to attempt to sell his street art on location and leave the problem of its removal in the hands of the winning bidder.
Besides graffiti, Banksy also builds physical prop pieces to address social issues. Take the project below for example, called the Sirens of the Lambs. In it, a slaughterhouse truck has hit the meatpacking district in New York carrying a cargo of squealing and crying plush animals.

Tattoos can look beautiful on any chosen body part, but a hand/ wrist tattoo can look exceptionally beautiful depending on what message it portrays. Most of us were given two arms and therefore two wrists by mother nature. This can be depicted beautifully in a pair of tattoos, one on each wrist. These sorts of tattoos lend itself perfectly for symbolic and meaningful messages. For example, Regret on one wrist and Nothing on the other. For most people, tattoos are an extremely creative way to express oneself and our hands are probably the most used body parts in a day. Therefore, if there are some meaningful tattoos on your wrists, they are sure to be noted. For those of you who are thinking about getting a tattoo done we have rounded up a collection of some of the most creative wrist tattoos.
We do feel the need to point out that wrist tattoos can be a bit painful. Wherever the sun and wind hits you the most will hurt the least, as the skin will be tougher there. Now wherever one portion of your body joins up with another, these areas will hurt worse. Your skin is thinner and the nerve endings are closer to the surface. The area immediately behind the hand where the wrist meets is said to be one of the most painful spots on the body to get a tattoo done. Therefore, its advised to move the tattoo at least one inch back from the hand.

Sleeve tattoos are slowly climbing the ladder as one of the most popular forms of tattoo art. A Sleeve tattoo refers to a tattoo done on the arms or legs, which covers the entire area similar to a sleeve of a shirt. Sleeve tattoos are usually an assembly of small and large designs and are put together with backgrounds designs like stars, flowers, water or fire. Its not uncommon that they take several ink sessions and years before they are completed. The feeling that gives a person who has this kind of tattoo can only be described as powerful and awesome. It has been known that people who actually do not have that kind of confidence try to get it by getting such a tattoo done.
Getting such tattoos have known to have transferred timid pussycats into roaring tigers. However, one should think carefully before they pick a design that fits them. Some people do have the common sense to do so while others will probably spend the rest of their lives with a bitter reminder never to fall asleep in a tattoo parlor ever again. Below we have rounded-up the best and the worst examples of sleeve tattoos. Enjoy and remember you are free to share your own tattoos as well by uploading them in the upload section.

Tattoos once part of a sub-culture populated by men and women with serious macho credentials has become so mainstream that even my grandmother has one now (which I will not post pictures off for obvious reasons). A big reason is probably the media and how more and more celebrities are starting to look like they are key members of the Midnight Boys Bike Club. When it comes to celebrity tattoos Angelina Jolie might have the most photographed tattoos of them all, but check out these other celebrity tattoos for a few star shocks and surprises!
