Agles, Suns and Moons

Angel Jewelry

Here are two of the many angel designs that Mark has done. Most are custom (but not these ones), so if you have an angel that you particularly like, send us a picture and we will make it. We call these two angels the Assertive Angel and the Dancing Angel. These angels can have either a triangle (an AIDS angel), a heart (a Love angel) or a spiral (the birth-life-death-rebirth angel) in its middle. If you don't tell us what you want we'll send you an angel with a heart in the middle.

Moon Jewelry

The moon is light in darkness; the manifestation of the divine in the void. The tidal influence of the moon, its waxing and waning, has resulted in its association cross-culturally with water, death, and the female reproductive cycle. It is a symbol of the female/goddess energy of the divine. Our moons are hand cut, hand rounded, and hand polished to a high shine - like every other piece for that matter - making every piece a one of a kind.

Moon and Star Pendants

The moon is light in darkness, the manifestation of the divine in the void and is a symbol of female/ goddess energy. The star represents solar, or male energy. A moon + star piece of jewelry therefore is the yin yang of the heavens - male and female, light and dark, chaos and order (which is chaos and which is order, eh?)

This symbol appears on the flags of a number of Moslem countries and is often (in a slightly different rotation) seen as a symbol of Islam though it appears to considerably predate the birth of that religion. Another interpretation of this symbol is as the conjunction of the Venus and the crescent moon in the night sky. The waxing moon was a renowned Greek symbol for Artemis so it may be that this symbol originally referred to Artemis and Aphrodite.

Moon Female Jewelry

The moon symbolizes the cyclic, mysterious, feminine and tidal forces of the goddess. The cross subscript stands for the earth and again for the female. The symbol as a whole represents the power of the goddess in her aspects as Gaia and Luna. As the female with pentagram was dreamed by Pam, this was dreamed by a friend of hers! We can make her smaller or larger.

A pair of xs moons with female make great dangle earrings and would be twice the price of the pendant ($80). Email us about that.

Profile Sun Pendant

  • Small: $50 Code:167
  • Medium: $60 Code:065
  • Large: $80 Code:690

The sun, the life giver, is the primary symbol for the divine as the male godform in all human cultures. Associated with the male spirit, the sun's symbols are: fire, gold, the eagle and the lion. We have several versions of the sun as it is a popular symbol (especially with Leos!). Though it is the moon that is normally thought of as having a face, we have put a face in profile here for "The Man in the Sun."

Sun with Stone Pendants

Although solar deities are generally male and "enemies" of the lunar deity (usually female), sun goddesses are found on every continent. Some mythologists believe that sun goddesses are actually more common worldwide than their male counterparts. We believe that solar deities are primarily male because a few better known mythologies (ancient Greece and Egypt) have male solar dieties. The dualism of sun/male/light and moon/female/darkness is found in many European traditions that derive from Orphic and Gnostic philosophies, with a notable exception being Germanic mythology, where the Sun is female and the Moon is male.

Both these suns have a large central stone: a beautiful dark citrine, but also would be lovely with amber, garnet or opal (spectacular!). Or how about a black star sapphire or a black diamond?! Get heavy! Or go less expenisive - dark citrines are pricey. Email us about that.

This was a one-of-a-kind, custom piece because of the stone, which was a very intricate cut. The prices I have given are for an equally stunning AA grade faceted citrine. We can get higher quality stones (not that a AA is low quality by any means!) in some sizes. Email us about that. Would you like this without the ouroboros? Happy to oblige: $25, $30 and $40 less. Sun/Moon Jewelry

Here the sun encloses the moon, becoming a symbol of union: the yin yang of the heavens. This design based on tattoo flash by Ken Cameron.

"The Sun, Sawel, and the Moon, Menot/Men deities, possibly twin children of the supreme sky-god Dyeus from proto Europe - continued in Hindu religion as Surya and Mas; in Iranian religion as Hvar and Mah; in Greek as Helios and Selene (these were later pushed out by imported Anatolian deities Apollo and Artemis); in Latin mythology as Sol and Luna and in German mythology as Sol and Mani. The usual scheme is that one of these celestial deities is male and the other female, though the exact gender of the Sun or Moon tend to vary among subsequent Indo-European mythologies. Crosses

Crosses are very old symbols, long pre-dating Christianity, and generally refer to the feminine principle, or the axis mundi (the center of the world). Christianity adopted many of these attributions through the veneration of the Virgin Mary and the placing of Christ as intercessor between God and Man. On the left is our version of the Christian cross, with slightly flared arms. The cross crosslets, on the right, can be seen both as a Christian and a non-Christian cross with the crosslets being guardian emblems, that is, Christ as guardian or in more pagan terms as restricting the flow of energy and protecting the earth center. The fourth arm, pointing down, is longer, showing the direction of energy moving from spirit to earth, or in Christian terms because of the crucifixion cross.

Crucifix, 14kt Gold and Argentium Pendant

  • Medium: $375 Code:394au
  • Large: $525 Code:362au

A crucifix is a cross with a representation of Jesus' body, or corpus. It is the principal symbol of the Christian religion. It is primarily used in the Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Churches and emphasizes Christ's sacrifice—his death by crucifixion. INRI is an acronym of the Latin phrase IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDAEORVM, which translates as: "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews" from the New Testament . INRI is often placed above the head of Christ on a crucifix and could be placed on this one.

This stunning crucifix is a modern, simple form that shows its beauty through the use of gold and silver. Be sure to look at the enlargement! It can be had in all gold, all silver, or a yellow and white gold combination. Email us about any of those combinations. The first one was a commission and also an homage to Mark's mother who was Roman Catholic.

Gothic Cross Jewelry

The cross on the left is laminated (two sheets of silver, one cut out and flush-soldered to the other), textured, and oxidized. The scalloped ends, in Christianity, refer to the Trinity, but this cross is much older than Christianity and the scallops originally referred to the triune nature of the goddess while the cross itself was a symbol for both the Earth and femininity. This, like almost all of our pieces, can be made larger - Email for details.

Ichthys Jewelry

Spelled Ichthus or Ichthys this is the sign of Christ, the fisher of men, the Piscean savior. When Christians were under peril of death in Christ's era they developed a secret code to identify one another without being caught by the Romans - one person would draw 1/2 of the fish in the sand with his sandal and if the other person completed the drawing, they both knew they were safe and could talk about Christian matters, like meetings. The fish part comes from the fact that the first letters in Christ's name as 'Jesus Christ Son of God,' in Greek, spelled the Greek word for fish - icthos. This and the Chi Rho are true Christian symbols, almost certainly created by early Christians!

Chi Rho Pendants

The Chi Rho is one of the earliest forms of christogram, and is used by Christians. It is formed by superimposing the first two (capital) letters chi and rho () of the Greek word "" = Christ in such a way to produce the monogram . Although not technically a cross, the Chi Rho invokes the crucifixion of Jesus as well as symbolizing his status as the Christ.

The Chi-Rho symbol was also used by pagan Greek scribes to mark, in the margin, a particularly valuable or relevant passage; the combined letters Chi and Rho standing for chrston, meaning "good." Some coins of Ptolemy III Euergetes were marked with a Chi-Rho.

Mark has engraved the rim of the Chi Rho with the laurel leaf patterning of Roman triumphs, befitting this as a representation of Christ the King. The stone featured here is a lapis but sapphire, turquoise, amethyst, ruby and garnet would also be approrpiate to the symbolism. Email us with your choice.

This is an earth center cross combined with the four phases of the moon as stylized crescents at the ends of the arms of the cross and so symbolizes the union of earth and water. The lunar elements also associate this sign with the goddess. But this cross is also known as the vampire cross. By the way - not all earth center crosses have equal arms, obviously, though to a Christian, the extended bottom arm will always signify Christ's cross.

Maltese Cross Jewelry

This cross, adopted by Crusaders (the Knights of Malta and the Templars) long predates Christianity. Essentially and originally the cross derives from the natural phenomenon of two crossed sticks. The Maltese or Templar Cross is really a stylistic variation from this, to four wedge shapes facing each other. The equilateral cross also relates to the balance of the four elements by the fifth, spirit, which emerges from the four elements of earth, fire, water and air.

Originally an earth-center, mother-goddess symbol, this type of cross was adopted by the Crusaders in memory of Jerusalem, the mother of all cities, and the center of the Christian universe. Depicted on a banner as red on a white field, it was easy to see and may have turned the tide in some battles.

Omega Jewelry

The omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet, a long O. Omega has thus come to mean the end, the apocalypse, or a symbol of completion. In Christianity, Jesus Christ referred to himself as the Alpha (the first letter of the alphabet) and Omega (the last), asserting his perfection, completion, and inclusiveness. On the other hand, the omega could just signify that you or the person you buy this piece of jewelry for is the ultimate: the apocalypse, or the Be All and End All. We will do other greek letters - just email us.

In the variant of the Omega on the right, the letter is made from two sheets of sterling silver, the top flush-soldered onto a textured and oxidized back. Most letters, Greek, Roman, or whatever alphabet, can be made this way.

AA Symbol Jewelry: Triangle in Circle

The triangle in circle was adopted by Alcoholics Anonymous as its symbol. The triangle represent the union of body, mind, and spirit, the circle stands for the Divine. The symbol is quite ancient however. In ceremonial magick the spirit summoned by the magician is contained within this symbol so that it cannot escape. This symbol is one of protection and power. This is a popular symbol and is used by a number of organizations. For AA members it also stands for the reintegration of personality, damaged by addiction to alcohol.

This version has an amethyst in the center -an appropriate stone for AA because it means "not drunken" in Greek, after a low alcohol purple wine popular in ancient Greece. Key of Willingness Pendant

This is a signature piece and one of Mark's earliest designs. It came about from reading The Big Book and what Bill W had to say about the Third Step.

The willingness to adopt spiritual principles, according to Bill W, is the key to recovery and is also the Third Step of Alcoholics Anonymous. The three notches on the key refer to honesty, open mindedness, and willingness. A triangle in a circle represents the union of body, mind and spirit in the circle of the divine and is the symbol for Alcoholics Anonymous.

AA Crusader Cross Pendant

One of our customers requested this design for her husband who had doggedly achieved sobriety after a number of attempts and in the midst of catastrophic illness. His story inspired Mark to develop this symbol, uniting the cross of the crusader with the symbol of A.A. This is a 2 part piece with the AA symbol soldered on top of the cross.

Caduceus Pendant

The caduceus, the traditional symbol of Hermes, is often mistakenly used as a symbol of medicine, especially in the USA. The two-snake caduceus design has ancient and consistent associations with commerce, eloquence, trickery and negotiation - but not medicine. The REAL symbol for medicine is the Rod of Asclepius.

But, associated with medicine the caduceus is and our design expands the rod into a winged figure who wouldn't dream of trickery he is so attached to healing :)

Association of the caduceus with medicine can be traced to the Renaissance, where it was often associated with alchemy and wisdom. The modern use of the caduceus as a symbol of medicine became established in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century as a result of documented mistakes, misunderstandings and confusion!

Eye of Kanaloa Pendant

  • Large: $175 Code:349
  • Extra Large: $225 Code: 350

In the mythology of old Hawaii, Kanaloa was the god of the ocean, a healer god.

The word, ka-na-loa means " the great peace, or the great stillness "

The symbol generates subtle energy, known as " ki " in Hawaiian. By itself the symbol will help to harmonize the physical, emotional and mental energies of a room or other location. The energy may be accessed more directly by meditative gazing or by holding the symbol near something that needs harmonizing. The symbol can also amplify and harmonize other energy sources by placing it behind or in front of the source

Hunab Ku Pendant

This symbol is called the Galactic Butterfly which is said to represent all of the consciousness that has ever existed in this galaxy. This is all of our physical ancestors both human, animal, reptile, fish, shell fish, plants as well as the consciousness which organized all of the raw material from a whirling disk into stars then planets and solar systems. Big Meaning. So big that the original Maya had no symbol for this. In their civilization it was like having no name for God. Just knowing the concept was good enough. Later this pattern was devised by Toltec or Zapatec weavers as a pattern for blankets and this is where Jose Arguelles came across it. He called it Hunab Ku. The indigenous peoples call it "The Galactic Butterfly". Butterflies are seen as ancestors returning for a visit to physicality. Wearing one of these symbols is very powerful as it broadcasts your reaching to actively join the consciousness of our galaxy. (Mayan Majix).

Family Symbol Pendant

  • Small: $50 Code:419
  • Medium: $60 Code:420
  • Large: $80 Code:422
  • Extra Large: $110 Code:423

Mark developed this symbol as a tribute to parenthood and, with the design, to Henry Moore, the sculptor. The symbol is semi-representational, showing a mother, father, and a hollow area where their arms are holding each other that could be a child, the wish for a child, the child-to-be or their inner child. The symbol could also be a mother and older child with the mother cradling an infant. We have also made it so that the bottom open space is in the shape of an older child. Of course it could also be a two-headed Martian bringing home the groceries! (I'm just checking to see if anybody is actually reading this :)

This symbol looks great in 14kt gold - email us for prices.

Romani Pendants

The Romani (or Romany) are a large and extensively persecuted ethnic group sometimes known as gypsies, although this word has become something of a slur and has been replaced with the less perjorative Travellers. There are at least four million ethnic Romani in Europe and several million more Romanies may live out of Europe, in particular in the Middle East and in the Americas. The same type of ethnic slurs (baby kidnapping, thievery) have been used against the Roma (an alternative name) as have been used to justify the persecution of other ethnicities such as Jews and African Americans. This symbol is from one of the Romani flags. The Romani are a trans-national people so, during this age of hyper-nationalism, their refusal to recognize national borders becomes yet another reason for their persecution. But the Romani have survived and thrived and are an important ethnicity in many countries. This symbol celebrates this.

Note that this is a backed piece. we can make the large size as a cut-out but not the small or the medium - the open spaces are so close together!

Fleur De Lys Jewelry

Although a contemporary symbol for (the-nearly-back-from-Katrina) New Orleans and now the official symbol for Louisiana, the lily's symbolism is ancient. As one wiki writer said: "The use for ornamental or symbolic purposes of the fleur de lis is common to all eras and all civilizations. It is an essentially graphic theme found on Mesopotamian cylinders, Egyptian bas-reliefs, Mycenean potteries, Sassanid textiles, Gaulish coins, Mameluk coins, Indonesian clothes, Japanese emblems and Dogon totems. Most writers agree that it has little to do graphically with the lily, but disagree on whether it derives from the iris, the broom, the lotus or the furze, or whether it represents a trident, an arrowhead, a double axe, or even a dove or a pigeon! The essential point is that it is a very stylised figure, probably a flower, that has been used as an ornament or an emblem by almost all civilizations of the old and new worlds." So there.

The lily's symbolism dates back to Ancient Egypt. The Greeks believed Aphrodite added the lily's pistil to make it more phallic. It is the flower of the Archangel Gabriel and is important in heraldry because it resembles a scepter. The lily represents purity and, in some contexts, death. But the Fleur de Lys is probably modeled on an iris.

Medicine Wheel Pendant with Five Stones

  • Extra Large: $250 Code:599

This is an earth/sun center version of the Medicine Wheel ("medicine" being that which is sacred) of which there are some fifty types dating back to 2500 BC from the Rocky Mountain and Plains Indians. The points go to the four directions and the feathers symbolize air, sky & courage. Warriors would receive a feather for each act of bravery to hang from their personal medicine wheel.

The stones represent the four directions and the sun center, and also the four elements (earth, air, fire and water) plus the spirit/the divine. The stones are: North - moonstone, South - malachite, East - lapis, West - garnet and the sun/earth center - citrine. Other stones can of course be used. It comes on a cord with silver findings, but can be had with a jump ring too. If this piece interests you but you'd like it without stones or with a different number and kind of stone just email us. We can also make this smaller.
