- Always consult an experienced and trusted tattoo artist. You cannot change your tattoo once it's inked on your body; unless, of course, you get a laser removal surgery done or cover it up with other design(s).
- Make sure your tattoo artist uses a fresh, sealed needle for your tattoo. Also, a good check is to inspect your surroundings; look around the parlor and make a judgment whether the place seems hygienic/sanitized or not.
- Before selecting a design, do a thorough research on your own. If you cannot find a design that represents your feelings, ask your tattoo artist to draw a customized design. This way, your tattoo will be original and still have elements you want.
- Technically speaking, getting a tattoo done is a surgical operation. The tattoo artist is going to pierce your skin, till the 3rd layer. So yes, the tattoo is going to hurt.
- Depending on how intricate your design is, the length of the procedure will vary. Also, if you're getting a bigger tattoo done, your tattoo artist may ask you to come in sessions.
- Once the tattoo is complete, your tattoo artist will provide you with a set of guidelines to follow. Make sure you listen to him/her properly, clear any/all doubts, and follow the instructions to the tee.

- Rule #2 - If you're getting a tattoo in a foreign language, be absolutely sure that it's spelled correctly. You do not want to make any errors here.
- If you're a minor, do not get a tattoo done illegally. For minors, parents and/or guardians have to sign a consent form (in most states) before they can get tattoos.
- Think about the future and how the design you're selecting right now will mean to you 5, 10, or 20 years from now. Don't get a design just for the heck of it. Think before you ink.
