A 50th birthday is a time for celebration. If the guest of honor has a good sense of humor and likes to have a good time, check out the following unusual birthday party ideas.
Costume Party
Pick a decade over the last 50 years and ask guests to dress the part. If you choose the 1970s, decorate your house to reflect that time period. Hang a disco ball from the ceiling and place lava lamps on end tables. Make sure you have plenty of music to reflect the decade,so compile CD's ahead of time. Plan your menu around food and drink that was popular in that time period. A funny entertainment idea is to have a dance contest with dance moves from that decade.
Slumber Party
Host a co-ed slumber party for a new twist on a 50th birthday party. Ask guests to wear their favorite pajamas to the party. Rent several entertaining movies and have lots of good music to play from the past 50 years. Purchase or borrow favorite board games to play during the night. The menu can resemble that of slumber parties of years past: pizza, popcorn, chips, dips or fondue. If the guest of honor has a favorite alcoholic beverage, make that the drink of the night. Ask guests to bring sleeping bags and air mattresses if they would like to get some sleep. Provide an easy breakfast of doughnuts and coffee.
Funeral Party
If your guest of honor has a really good sense of humor, a funeral themed party could work. This will have to be a surprise party to have the desired response from the birthday man or woman. Ask guests to dress all in black. If women have black veils to wear over their faces, ask them to do so. The decor for this party will be all black. If you can, borrow some pretend gravestones from a friend's Halloween decoration collection. If you are going out to eat, rent a hearse or a limo.
